Learn more about banjo

The banjo is a stringed musical instrument known for its bright, lively sound and distinctive twang. It typically has a circular body with a thin membrane stretched over a frame, similar to a drumhead, which amplifies the sound of the strings. Most banjos have four or five strings and are played by plucking or strumming. Originating in African American communities in the United States during the 19th century, the banjo became a key instrument in genres like folk, bluegrass, country, and traditional American music. It is valued for its rhythmic drive and melodic versatility. The banjo’s unique tone and playing style make it a favorite among musicians seeking a lively, upbeat sound in both solo and ensemble performances.
