Learn more about west coast swing
West Coast Swing is a popular style of swing dance that originated in California in the 1940s and evolved from the Lindy Hop. Known for its smooth, elastic movements, West Coast Swing is typically danced to a variety of music genres, including blues, contemporary, jazz, and even country. The dance is characterized by its "slot" format, where dancers move back and forth along a linear path, rather than spinning or rotating around the floor like in other forms of swing dancing. West Coast Swing emphasizes improvisation, with the leader guiding the follower through a series of dynamic, often intricate patterns and syncopated footwork. The dance allows for a high degree of creativity and personal style, making it popular in both social and competitive dance settings. Its smooth, grounded feel, combined with its adaptability to different tempos and music, makes West Coast Swing a unique and widely enjoyed dance form across the globe.
