Learn more about jazz dance
Jazz dance is a lively and energetic dance style that originated in the early 20th century, influenced by African American rhythms, culture, and music. It evolved alongside jazz music, embracing improvisation, syncopated rhythms, and expressive movements. Jazz dance incorporates a wide range of styles, from the early charleston and swing dances to more contemporary forms seen in musical theater and commercial dance. The movements are characterized by high energy, sharp footwork, and fluid body isolations. Jazz dance is often performed to jazz music, but it also blends well with pop, funk, and contemporary sounds. It emphasizes individual expression, agility, and flexibility, often incorporating leaps, turns, and dynamic jumps. In the context of musical theater, jazz dance is used to tell a story through movement, blending technical skill with emotional expression. Whether in a dance studio or on stage, jazz dance remains a popular and influential genre, celebrated for its creativity and adaptability.
