Learn more about taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its emphasis on high, powerful kicks, fast footwork, and strong discipline. It combines combat techniques with self-defense, sport, and a philosophy of mental focus and respect. The term "taekwondo" translates to "the way of the foot and fist," reflecting its primary focus on using the legs and hands for striking, blocking, and defending. Taekwondo practitioners, or "taekwondoin," practice a variety of techniques including kicks like the spinning and jumping kick, as well as punches, blocks, and stances. It is also a sport, with Olympic events where competitors score points for controlled and accurate strikes. Taekwondo training incorporates forms (known as "poomsae"), sparring ("gyeorugi"), and breaking techniques, which help improve strength, flexibility, and mental focus. In addition to physical benefits, taekwondo teaches respect, perseverance, and courtesy, making it a holistic discipline for both mind and body.
