Athletics refers to a collection of sporting events that involve competitive physical activities, primarily focusing on running, jumping, throwing, and walking. Often called track and field, athletics includes events such as sprints, middle- and long-distance races, hurdles, relays, long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, javelin, and racewalking. It is one of the oldest forms of organized sports, dating back to ancient civilizations and playing a central role in the original Olympic Games. Athletics tests speed, strength, endurance, and agility, and it is practiced worldwide at amateur and professional levels. The sport promotes physical fitness, discipline, and sportsmanship, and it often serves as a foundation for many other athletic activities and team sports.
