Learn more about clay

Clay pottery refers to the creation of functional or decorative items from clay through shaping, firing, and glazing processes. It is one of the oldest forms of art and craftsmanship, with evidence of pottery dating back thousands of years. Potters start by molding wet clay into desired shapes, either by hand-building methods (such as coiling, pinching, or slab construction) or by using a pottery wheel to create symmetrical pieces. Once shaped, the pottery is fired in a kiln at high temperatures to harden and strengthen it. After the first firing, called bisque firing, the pottery is often glazed to add color, texture, and a protective layer. A second firing, known as glaze firing, melts the glaze to form a smooth, glossy finish. Clay pottery can include anything from bowls, vases, and plates to more artistic sculptural pieces. The tactile nature of clay and the creative potential of glazing make pottery both a functional and artistic expression.
