The Centre for Sound Communities
The Centre for Sound Communities is an arts-led social innovation lab at Cape Breton University dedicated to supporting diversity on campus and championing the careers of BIPOC and emerging scholars through research, training, and community engagement. The centre carries out research through artistic practices and standard methods, providing training for students, faculty, and community partners, and working with communities to develop connections and access resources. With a focus on addressing systemic inequities, the centre advances research through innovative sound and movement performance pieces, digital and digitized artifacts, and publications for academic and public audiences. The centre hosts various events, workshops, and residencies, and offers online courses, including a new course on Black Music Traditions: Africa & the Atlantic World. By fostering collaboration and innovation, the Centre for Sound Communities promotes research that serves the needs of under-represented and under-resourced populations.
